Sarah Hughes and David R J Stent present a collaborative work which poses questions regarding orders of dependence between an exhibition of three-dimensional sculpture and an associated body of writing. Part of this concern is addressed toward exhibition conventions whereby a physical exhibition is accompanied by a printed document, often serving to contextualise the show and provide information that can be taken away. Here that convention is both acknowledged and subverted, with an extended ‘essay’, replete with images and references, both serving to provide speculative commentary on the sculptures as well as becoming implicated in the exhibition itself.
At the exhibition launch event musician Dominic Lash will perform a solo double bass realisation of a composition derived from material in the exhibition.
