Scratch Off The Page is a performance platform and weekend exhibition of local live artists exploring graphic scores, experimental scripts, and page-based notation, inspired by former Waltham Forest resident and contemporary music composer Cornelius Cardew, his ensemble ‘Scratch Orchestra’ and their musical philosophy whereby anyone can join in, graphic scores are used and a strong emphasis on improvisation.
“Graphic scores are the symbolic representation of movement, sound, action and form, using methods such as graphic symbols and figures, path mapping, numerical systems, and letter and word notations outside the realm of traditional music, dance or theatrical notation.”
Live solo artists, collectives and companies from all backgrounds, disciplines and mediums across sonic, choreographic, textual, theatre and visual arts have been invited to scratch new or existing pieces of work during a live event on Friday night between the Object Book studio and TODAY bread event space, before exhibiting their scores, scripts and notations for an pop-up open exhibition over the weekend.
Finally, on the Monday after the exhibition weekend, we are inviting all participating artists back to the Object Book studio for an informal feedback and networking event with other artists and audience to discuss the works performed and exhibited, and how further events may emerge from the weekend around Waltham Forest.
Part of the Object Book Festival 2017, supported by London Borough of Waltham Forest Arts Development Grant, E17 Arts Trail and Central Parade/Meanwhile Spaces CIC. Produced by Sebastian H-W with assistance from Kate Rolison and Dr. Joseph Dunne.
This event marks the middle of the Object Book Festival 2017 – a month long festival of free and accessibile book arts events and workshops across Walthamstow & Chingford.
