This intriguing solo exhibition by mixed media sculptor, Carolyn Corfield, aims to take you on a journey into reverie with sculpture intended as an evocation of lost memories and forgotten dreams. A member of the Northern Potters, she has created a diversity of work in porcelain and stoneware alluding to visual and tactile aspects of the sea and its environment whilst also connecting with myth. Curious groupings of glazed ceramic slivers entitled ‘Sea Abstractions’ are displayed, as if specimens for forensic study, whereas the motion of waves is captured on the rims of exquisite porcelain vessels. Several highly textured, colourfully glazed, wall mounted and figurative sculptures seem to be made from water, while others reference legendary creatures and deities of the sea. Some of the latter are a development of Carolyn’s coveted polished porcelain hand treasures, on this occasion reclining within a wave. Enhancing the overall experience, sounds and images of the sea ‘clothe’ sculpture and spectator alike, subsuming all in a kaleidoscope of movement and watery light. Do visit, this experience will draw on those early memories perhaps now deep in your subconscious.
