2-2:40 In Conversation
Kai-Oi Jay Yung and curator Liz Cooper will discuss the development of Yung’s process-led practice, from gallery-based video installations such as Amnesia; A Rehearsal, to audience engaged projects such as Happy Stacking to the continuous performance strand in her practice from video to live audience participation in works such as Trampoline and Military Craft. In Shadow Dance, Yung devises a contextual structure that brings together active contributors who will help shape the artist’s series of gallery based activities, as she transforms the gallery into a dance and movement studio. Through sharing of choreography and physical moves with dance practitioner’s ranging from Alexander technique, breaking and hooping to Danca Afro-Brasileira, she will then open this up through interaction with the public. Yung considers our physical bodily propensities and the intersection between art forms to question hierarchies in identity and society. How are connections made between mind, body and psyche, through this physical expression? What are the links between Pranayama, Bartenieff and codified theatre movement, and the visual process? How does this then inform how the artist engages with the physical and social space around her? Can movement be a tool for personal and social development?
