In ‘Shedding Skins’ Maria Hayes draws movement from observation with the assistance of a video mixer projection technique. She has developed this technique so she can look at her subject continuously as she draws. The resulting image is not of what the subject looks like, but of the subject’s movement, which cannot be seen unless it is drawn. Seeking the underlying structure of observed life, Maria Hayes draws what we perceive and experience but cannot see in any other way. She draws on rural traditions and landscapes to generate new works and sheds drawings as she completes each act of looking and mark making. One drawing is performed on vellum and the process of drawing is projected onto other skins. This show offers the opportunity to see the artist working and to participate.
