Maia Spall exhibits a large selection of her exciting abstract paintings, in her Shifting Shapes exhibition at Xavier White’s gallery. Presenting works that are about the story / journey of movement between spaces. The changes that occur, how one flexes and the shapes one forms within the different forces /spaces in the outer and our inner worlds, and the eternal dynamic between the two.Combining the abstracted brilliance and mystery of Turner with the tactile textural reality of 1950’s abstract expressionism. Maia’s works are gravity defying in their expression of change, vibrant colours create depths and play with the picture plain. Full of colour and texture they worked expressively with movement and light. An oceanic performance / ballet is presented to us. Her figurative works have ghostly feel, a mystery, as if a memory of someone, somewhere, that’s not quite clear in the minds eye. Absent figure where the environment is of more importance. The works have a eurhythmy that brings them to life and makes them dance. Maia has long had an interest in the coordination of rhythm between the musical and the physical form. Living in Whitstable she has linked this with the sea’s motions and physicality. In Shifting Shapes she brings to London, originally her hometown, her shapes to change spaces.
