Aly Grimes is an independent curator and Co-Founding Director of Stryx - an artist-run project space and studios located in Birmingham, UK. Her curatorial work is concerned with new media art, collaborative methodologies and interdisciplinary modes of practice.
Aly is interested in fostering long-standing connections between artistic practitioners around the globe and is a founding member of September Collective, a pluri-cultural group of creative producers formed under the auspices of the School of Curatorial Studies, Venice.
In 2015 she co-curated ‘Symphony of Hunger; Digesting Fluxus in Four Movements’ with September Collective and in partnership with Fondazione Bonotto, Europe’s largest Fluxus art collection. This also featured twelve new international commissions.
Aly is currently managing a solo curatorial project entitled ‘Short Circuit’ for which she has recently received a Curator Bursary Award from New Art West Midlands, Grants for the Arts Award from the Arts Council England and International Research Programme funding from The Danish Arts Foundation.
The project comprises a re-assessment of an archetypal touring exhibition featuring nine new media artists and collectives and will travel from Birmingham to Venice and Copenhagen from 2016 – 17.
Aly has previously worked for the National Trust, IKON Gallery (Birmingham), Flowers Galleries (London) and Compton Verney (Warwickshire) and has recently been a guest consultant for the Chinese Contemporary Art MA course at Birmingham City University.
