Signs and signifiers is a solo show that is saturated with colour and full of originality and humour. Mal Charles’ ongoing brief of investigating visual meaning is tackled with new rigor here and he includes an extensive range of work, from drawings, paintings and illustrations, through to digital work, all selected from the last four years production.New innovations abound, there are experiments with a subtractive process of using watercolour in the illustrations, a digital transfer method that he has extended into three dimensions in the paintings and the later work makes use of cutting away or through the canvas, to signify images by means of space rather than paint or form.A rich tapestry of influences is easily identified in the work. These range from the Byzantine Icon, Islamic Art and modern philosophy, and as always, his colourist ambitions are well to the fore.
