The Tenfoot Series of paintings is a distillation of Hull’s hidden and unseen urban routes. These hidden spaces provide inspiration, their roughness and irregularity observed, recorded and re-interpreted as a new urban picturesque. They are the make do and mend of fences, the mock Tudor and Swiss cottage chalet style garages, rusting metal, rotting wood and beguiling attempts at security. There is no visual clue in the paintings of a horizon or vanishing point, yet this is not a Modernist reduction to a flat surface, nor an instance of decorative shape and colour. The paintings express a first hand exploration of a familiar landscape through the concentrated and detailed process of painting in oil paint on an intimate scale revealing the hidden dimension of the everyday.
The drawings give a more contextual view of the settings through detailed observation and attention to the process of mixed media on paper.
Exhibition is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11am until 4pm. Other times by appointment please ring 07752 905688.
