Imagine a collision of Méret Oppenheim’s fur-covered teacup and Lynda Benglis’ massive dildo….what do you get? No, the answer isn’t object sex!
It’s a profound thing to think you can make art from observing the minutia in your daily life. Something Borrowed brings together eleven contemporary female artists working with found objects and materials, who are playful, disobedient, and critical about the world around them.
Exploring the female perspective of borrowing is something particular; it’s social, it’s an act of bonding. These artists work with memories, borrowing objects because they spark with history, memories, and meaning. The power of observation practiced by these eleven artists link decay with giving life, transform pain into desire, coax the intangible from the tangible, locate the virtual in a space of its own, and continually subvert expectation.
It’s not the objects, but the sizzling memories that make the work.
