*The exhibition, which formally launches on the afternoon of 25th February 2024 at Paladar Restaurant brings an insight of Tere Chad’s creative practice to your dining table.

What is the artist’s source of inspiration? This is a question that art critics, collectors and art lovers in general may wonder about when viewing an artwork. Tere Chad’s versatile practice is a response to her observations of everyday life. As someone who cycles more than 40 miles per week in London, she relates to the way Walter Benjamin (1892 – 1940) describes Charles Baudelaire’s creative process as an act of flâneur strolling through the city.  Instead of writing poems inspired by the 19th Century streets of Paris, Tere Chad has found London to be a cultural hub that has opened her doors to working across the world. Her work involves recycling, community engagement, Latin American empowerment and critical thinking over the impact of new technologies.

‘Southern Flâneur’ includes a series of photographs of her installations, performances and participatory artworks in London, Sicily, Mexico, Northern Ireland and Southern Spain. A strong body of work that has set up the path for her upcoming first big institutional international show: Neo Norte 5.0, to be presented at the Memorial da América Latina in Sao Paulo, Brazil. (2024 – 2025).

Neo Norte is an artistic research project that she started while studying at Central Saint Martins (2016 – 2018) and later kept on developing while studying at the Royal College of Art (2018 – 2020). Neo Norte is inspired in the Uruguayan artist Joaquín Torres García (1874 – 1949) to suggest the South to become the New North. After having the experience of working in 14 different countries in the Southern and Northern hemisphere, she is deeply committed to inviting citizens of the global South onwards embracing the cultural values they provide to the rest of the world.  She believes the way culture of the South connect to nature, can offer solutions to face Climate Change and many of the 21st Century’s challenges.

Paladar Restaurant has long been an advocate and supporter of Tere Chad as an artist. Now, five years after her first exhibition in the restaurant (Jan-Feb 2019), Paladar has invited her back to showcase a compilation of her recent work. This includes a selection of her sculptures, oil paintings, and prints of her series “Calling Back” commemorating the centenary of  the first Telephone Box designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (a series which has been partly acquired by the Nelimarkka-Foundation in Finland).

The exhibition will also include her permanent installation ‘Our Lady of Charity’ which was commissioned by Paladar in 2021 and is on permanent display in the restaurant’s delightful courtyard garden.

During the course of the exhibition, Tere Chad will host a number of public events to celebrate Latin America’s cultural richness, which you are more than welcome to join.
