My work starts from a history of growing up queer in a conservative farming community in New Zealand. The formative influences of New Zealand landscape and art have come across from there to contemporary London with its unlikely conjunction of colours and textures seen on the streets.
I use painting to investigate notions of identity and fluidity through abstracted faces and animal forms. They reference the earliest histories of human self-representation together with a modern sense of the multiplicity of the psyche. The faces and bodies often create unlikely or impossible animal-human figures.
