This pilot one-day workshop with Hen Norton looks at all aspects of making a freelance career work and will cover the following areas:

  • How to set up as a self employed person and managing your accounts
  • Understanding and writing a business plan
  • Prioritising and managing your time to best effect
  • Sources and creative ideas for financing your practice
  • Identifying, building and developing a network and your audiences
  • PR & marketing strategies for yourself and your work
  • Building a brand as a creative practitioner

This session is suitable for anyone starting out or already working in the creative industries, from a recent graduate to more established practitioners who are thinking about working for themselves.

Please note that as this is a pilot session there will be some written recording taking place during the session.

Hen Norton has worked as a freelancer most of her career, following a brief time working as an actor’s agent and then in film. Hen founded the first crowdfunding platform in the UK, We Did This, alongside working as a creative producer for a variety of commercial companies, arts organisations and social enterprises. She is now an independent creative producer, filmmaker and consultant to the creative industries and is often described as having a typical ‘portfolio career’.

“I found Hen’s advice really helpful …. It was also quite inspiring, as a young female professional working in the arts to attend such an interesting workshop run by a young woman who is ambitious and successful.” (Feedback from an artist/organiser from a previous How to develop audiences through crowdfunding seminar with Hen Norton, 2012)
