Storytellers | Josie Clouting
“ Trees are keen to tell us so much. They’ll tell us about the land, the water, the people, the animals, the weather and time. And they will tell us about their lives, the good bits and bad. Trees tell a story, but only to those who know how to read it.”
Tristan Gooley ‘How to Read a Tree’
‘Storytellers’ is an exhibition of works that celebrate the wonderful textures, sculptural shapes and resilience of trees.
The exhibition brings together a collection of oil paintings and monoprints inspired by trees that have sparked my interest on walks in various locations over the last couple of years. I love discovering trees in unexpected places; twisted into strange shapes by the relentless wind on the side of a mountain, or at the bottom of a valley covered in vibrant moss and clinging onto life.
There is a both a feeling of awe and hope in the presence of old trees, knowing they have the potential to live on for perhaps hundreds of years. Their gnarled branches and weathered bark are a reminder of the history of the landscape. The tree stands as a silent witness to the ever-changing world around it, a symbol of resilience and endurance.
