Although its introspective nature originally prompted Couturier’s rejection of painting in the 1970’s, abstract art is now a major area of experimentation. “Without external references,” he says, “I find that abstract imagery can “speak”, through purely visual means, of things beyond imagination.” In stark contrast Couturier also explores representational work in paint, graphics, prints, 3D and video pieces. Whereas the abstract work has a metaphysical dimension, the representational work is rooted in an all too material and human world. This provocative show brings these two contradictory visions together for the first time and explores their contrasts, continuities and inconsistencies.
