This is a performance by Andi Chapple and Musicians of a piece composed by Andi Chapple, a sound and visual artist living in Sedbergh. It takes the poetry of Emily Dickinson (1830–1886), one of the best-loved American poets, and sets it to English hymn tunes of the era arranged for a small folk/jazz ensemble with live digital sounds added. As part of the performance, the sound of people and traffic outside the venue will be captured live and transformed, with computer processing and a surround-sound setup, into a sonic metaphor for the isolation Dickinson experienced and the extreme mental states which she explored in her work. The performance, to which entry is free, begins at 1pm and lasts about an hour. Lunches (not free) are available at the venue from 12 noon. The composition and first performance of the piece were supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England; this performance is part of the 2009 Sedbergh Festival of Books and Drama.
