TALK DESCRIPTION

In this talk Fay Penrose will consider how complex shapes and spaces, as found in both anatomical and built architecture, are readily explored via drawing, particularly in the early exploratory phases of understanding. In her work as an anatomist she uses drawing for many reasons including quick sketching on the back of a dissection guide in an anatomy class, illustrating scientific papers or observational drawings for deeper engagement with the subject and referring to other people’s drawings. Working drawings allow deep thinking and conceptual challenges to be addressed in an immediate and accessible way. We will look at how communication to students and clients is often facilitated via a quick sketch, either to simplify or expand on areas that are hard to understand.

Guest Series Format: We will be joined by guests from different fields: art, ethnobotany, anatomy, and photography each of whom is committed to drawing. The format for the Guest Series will be for each guest to give a talk about how drawing relates to their own work and field, then at a later date they will lead a day long drawing workshop based on their practice.
