Jeb Haward Sophie Barber
Jeb Haward curates an exhibition of work by two of his students from Sussex Coast College Hastings, Rebecca Evans and Sophie Barber, alongside his work and that of his teacher, Roy Oxlade.
Roy, taught by the hugely significant 20th century painter David Bomberg, was a great influence on Jeb and he has passed onto Rebecca and Sophie, both only 20 years old, some of the attitude to image making that Roy encouraged. Visitors will experience a great directness and vibrancy in the work of these artists. All four of them attest to image making that celebrates the everyday, birds, plants, buildings, golf clubs etc with a personal, painterly vision. Roy was against formulas, the established conventions of painting and dullness. He had a fearsome loathly of non-committal daubing and expected students to express themselves without fear.
This exhibition reveals a philosophical teaching lineage that will excite some and, possibly, appall others. Whatever else it does, it doesn’t hold back
