The egg the womb the head and the moon is an exhibition that offers an alternative to idealised representations of motherhood by looking at the everyday, the complexities of emotions and the lived reality. Honest portrayals, visuals and narratives weave through a rich variety of subjects: fertility, pregnancy, birth, miscarriage, of love, longing and loss and the tug and the pull of mothering. Curator Helen Sargeant of the MeWe Arts Collective invited a group of artists, academics, poets, performers, film-makers and writers to contribute posts about their experiences of motherhood to a website: www.eggwombheadmoon.com over a duration of 42 weeks to mirror that of a pregnancy. This online space enabled artists to share and exchange ideas in order to reflect upon their life experiences, make and collaborate on new work. The exhibition has been born out of the communications, dialogues and creative exchanges that took place online. Personal and powerful artworks explore a diverse range of subjects about the maternal through installation, drawing, print, sculpture, video, photography, sound, performance, poetry and texts. Exhibiting Artists: Adele Myers, Bird Jones and Heald, Char March, Eti Wade, Frances Earnshaw, Helen Sargeant, Janet Griffiths, Kaye Heyes, Lena Simic, Mo Brown, Paula Chambers, Paula McCloskey, Rachèle Howard, Rebecca Lupton, Sally Barker, Tabitha Moses, Teresa Wilson, Tracey Kershaw
