Armed with an anthology of Philip Larkin poems and keys to an old registry office, artists and residents of Chatham are creating their own arts utopia. The ideas behind the Importance of Elsewhere project were cultivated at a Curious Planet artist development event. The workshops and creation of art works has been pioneered by arts company Curious Planet, in collaboration with several community groups including Kent Association for the Blind Strood Arts, MCCH Pathways and a group of emerging artists. The initial idea was to create a piece of work that would respond to Philip Larkin’s poetry in an unusual way, via the creative exploration of a large rambling building. The New Art Centre were able to offer access to the old Registry Office of Chatham, which is a large 21-room, old Victorian House about to be re-developed into sheltered housing. The Importance of Elsewhere project is an arts partnership project between Curious Planet and the New Art Centre.
