MA Show 2012, Canterbury Christ Church University. 8 artists show painting, sculpture and graffiti-based work in the gallery and studios. “What these graduating artists have at core is how and what comprises identity. Morphing multiples of nightmare holiday snaps as painting presented by a post Dadaist interventionist; soft sculpted mermaids offer less allure, rather more of Sweeney Todd and the visceral reclamation of the female; landscape and mapping reworked as mass observation becomes a painter’s response to digital and reproduced images; still lives enact the anthropomorphic theatre of the absurd; the cathedral is weighted and ghosted by paint and shadows; religion becomes Narnia and a postmodern last supper; portraiture is identity crisis; while graffiti questions the sanctity of the gallery.”
