“The London Group, the oldest and most esteemed artists’ collective, is proud to unveil the selected non-member exhibiting artists for its upcoming 85th Open exhibition.”
The London Group Open 2023, will present artworks from the Group’s members and selected non-members. The result is a display featuring established and emerging artists, all working at the forefront of contemporary practice.
The London Group was set up in 1913 by thirty-two artists including Walter Sickert, Jacob Epstein, Wyndham Lewis, David Bomberg, and Henri Gaudier Brzeska, with the aim of creating a powerful artist-run group to act as a counter-balance to institutions such as the Royal Academy. The founding group created a unique structure for an organisation, that has gone on to successfully nurture the careers of many of Britain’s best-known artists. Today, The London Group is a thriving democratic artists’ collective practicing in all disciplines, from painting and sculpture to moving image, digital and performance, with a full annual events programme in London around the UK and abroad.
‘‘The quality and scope of the nearly two thousand entries for this year’s London Group Open Call 2023 was both a beautiful and exciting snapshot of the current artistic practice in the UK,’’ says Exhibition Lead Jockel Liess.
“Founded in 1913, the London Group has played a pivotal role in nurturing the careers of many of Britain’s best-known artists. The Open exhibition stands as a testament to The London Group’s commitment to supporting artists and providing a platform for visual art practice. It presents a distinguished opportunity for artists to exhibit alongside the Group’s members, in one of London’s most prestigious contemporary gallery spaces.
‘‘The large variety in media, subject matter and style can only be seen as a reflection of the great and healthy diversity within our striving artistic community. It was a wonderful and interesting privilege to get such a comprehensive insight into the aesthetic as well as socio-political concerns that are raised by and inform artists within their practice today,’’ Jockel Liess continues.
The London Group’s 85th Open Exhibition will be open and free to the public at CopelandGallery, Copeland Park, 133, Rye Lane, SE15 4ST, from Friday 10 November to Sunday 26 November 2023, from 11am to 5pm daily with late openings on Thursday and Friday until 7pm. The Private View will be held on Thursday 9 November, 6pm – 9pm.
