This online webinar takes the film A Difficult Place – discovering the cost of living crisis in Brighton – as a starting point to explore and highlight the practices of artists and arts organisations intersecting with community projects supporting housing and food activism.
At the event we will hear from speakers including Chloe Hoare (Phoenix Art Space), Sarah McCarthy (Phoenix Food Shop), Jo Capper (Grand Union, Birmingham), Claire Wearn (Brighton Photo Fringe) and Becky Warnock, (Artist for When the Seeds Fall project with Moulsecoomb Forest Garden) that are part of different collaborations happening across the UK as they discuss their projects and approaches to creating common ground through culture and community. There will then be some time for a Q&A/discussion and sharing of experiences.

A Difficult Place (2023) by filmmaker John Edwards and artist and Lecturer at the University of Brighton Katy Beinart is a film that reveals the true cost of the cost-of-living crisis, and its devastating effect on individuals. In a series of conversations filmed at Phoenix Art Space, the Phoenix Community Centre, and on the London Road in Brighton, the group discuss how rising food prices, together with the added changes to their local shopping area, have drastically impacted their lives. The film documents individual experiences and perspectives at a local level during this challenging time and shows how the community has come together to support each other through the Phoenix Food Shop. It provides a platform for residents to share their stories more widely, highlighting personal narratives beyond the statistics.
