Curated by Wayne Warren, ‘Oscillations’ documents the work of Lauren Goldie and Jonathan Wright. The exhibition uses sensory engagement to explore technological advancement. Lauren’s research connects through the repetitive actions of asteroid mining equipment, and the migration from raw to processed material. Jonathan interacts with oscillating radio waves and artworks of confliction; they pose as objects of purpose with unidentified functions. The outcome of both artists are objects of utility, which engage with remote communication across long distances.
Jonathan Wright aims to produce work that shows how ideas and forms change as they move from one part of the world to another. He combines them in previously unexplored relationships using form to create new worlds of encounter. Wright utilises ‘everyday’ structures and objects, often posing as structures of transmission, exposing their inter-relationship to a contemporary narrative. The objects make reference to the machinery of the modern city and the interconnectedness of our everyday lives. We are surrounded by structures whose functions are mysterious, and these structures become invisible in their ubiquity. When encouraged to look at them afresh, to reverse our perspective, we realise we can see more and see better. Nothing can be taken for granted and nothing is as it appears to be.
Lauren Goldie researches asteroid mining within her work and her ongoing PhD at Central Saint Martins. In 2022 the global space economy increased by 8%, the industry addresses issues including overpopulation, existential threats and climate change. Within her practice and ongoing PhD, Goldie researches asteroid mining, questioning its purpose to alleviate environmental impacts caused by resource extraction on Earth. Through sculpture and printmaking, she explores potential ramifications of asteroid mining practices, including disturbances to orbital patterns, resource ownership and debris.
Artworks exhibited at The Second Act gallery consider adaptations necessary to mining equipment when working in microgravity. Prototypes investigate dust mitigation, surface adhesion, modular drill design and non-rotary mining processes.
