The Technician Show is an exhibition of work by West Midlands based visual arts technicians taking place at The Hyper-Lab, HMV Empire, Coventry (26 August – 11 September 2022). The exhibition highlights the regions gallery technicians; them as people and practicing artists, as well as their invaluable contribution to its arts scene.
With freelance technicians hit, perhaps hardest, out of all arts workers during the national emergency in 2020, and then working on major West Midlands arts and cultural events after covid-19 restrictions were lifted, including Coventry City of Culture 2021, The British Art Show 9-Wolverhampton 2022, and Birmingham 2022 Festival-Commonwealth Games, the timing and placement of such a show is particularly poignant. The Hyper-Lab at The HMV Empire, which was part of The Coventry Biennial of Contemporary Art 2021: HYPER-POSSIBLE seems the perfect venue to host such an exhibition, with several West Midlands based technicians having worked on the space in the UK City of Culture year.
Bringing together artists from multiple gallery technical teams, the show celebrates the unsung heroes of the artworld; those that physically put exhibitions together, and without whom, there would be no regional arts scene. An eclectic mix of painting, sculpture, performance, drawing, photography, and light installation The Technician Show sets out to showcase the diversity, creativity and technical skill of technicians across the West Midlands.
