Six artists have been invited to turn their artistic gaze on themselves for the 2018 residency and exhibition at Space36. The challenge for each artist has been to reflect on their own self, be as objective as possible while inevitably being fully immersed in the subject of their investigation. The results will be on show over the weekends of 9/10 and 16/17 June (2-6pm) as an exhibition “the truth detectives at no:36” at Space 36, 36 Ashley road, London, N19 3AF.
The artists taking part are: Liz Brown, Liana Bortolozzo, Esperanza Gomez Carrera, Christina Lovey, Louise Scillitoe-Brown and Ahmed Farooqui.
Liz Brown turns the camera on herself and focuses on the marks of ageing on her own body. Esperanza Gomez Carrera creates a map of her life, signposting the people, places and events that have shaped its contours. Christina Lovey uses images collected over a lifetime and displayed on her bedroom wall to create a deck from Tarot to explore the self within.
Louise Scillitoe-Brown’s installations are grounded in her passion for the mysteries of colour and the way colour delights and beguiles our perceptions and emotions. Ahmed Farooqui uses numbers to create sculptures that are mathematical interpretations of personal relationships. Liana’s Bortolozzo’s immersive work invites you to Planet L, a private inner space populated by creatures that are friends and family, dead and alive, dreams not yet fulfilled and painful memories.
During the course of the exhibition there will be opportunities for visitors to talk to the artists and the hosts in the relaxed setting of a garden cafe serving homemade cakes.
