Rowan Walker’s The Waiting Room transforms Whitespace into a medical zone, inviting viewers to embody the space as pseudo-patients embarking into a realm of the unknown. The exhibition showcases her examination of the vulnerability of the human body and the ongoing
internal and external influences it must contend with. The works combine clinical materials and sterile, pristine colours with aspects of the physical body to investigate the relationship between the familiar and the strange. Walker’s pairings of the scientific and the corporeal. create a sense of discomfort that expresses both the vulnerability of our forms and the fear that often arises in tandem with the medicinal. Aiming to foster a reflection on our relationship with our bodies and minds, the visceral nature of the works invokes the relinquishing of bodily control that occurs when entering a medical space. Walker’s works shift the space into a realm of contemplation as we are confronted with the reality of our transient nature.
