Thurle’s intricate paper relief works emerge from a range of sources including atlases, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, newspapers, maps, charts, official documents, comics, crosswords, technical handbooks and text books, catalogues, story books, poetry and classic literature. Starting with the look of text on a page and the feel of the paper, Thurle cuts, folds, weaves and stitches the paper into small, delicate units. She then reconstructs the pages into new visual formats, simultaneously related to the original sense of the text while constructing new structures, patterns and meanings. The works stem from her interest in the systems and structures of language, in the ordering, storing and disseminating of knowledge and information and the accessing and storing of words. The work further extends to an exploration of how these complex systems influence our thought patterns and determine our identities. Texts used for this exhibition include works by, Gertrude Stein, William Morris, Balzac, Matthew Arnold, as well as an ancient map of the English Channel. (www.thurle.com)
