Kirsty E. Smith makes sculptural works in response to her ongoing fascination with her surroundings, the domestic in particular. Her work is individual and distinctive and encapsulates the excitement and curiosity of a child when experiencing and interacting with objects for the first time. Her intention is to create work which resonates on a deeply emotive level and which acts as a vehicle to reconnect with a "place" or memory deep in our subconscious. Frillip Moolog is the name that she has given to such a place. Smith's work embodies a combination of personal and communal memories in that she uses objects and materials known to us all but with histories specific to individuals known to her. These sculptures are both endearing and disconcerting, like talking with old friends and yet at the same time being privy to intimate details of the lives of strangers. The Yin and Yang of Frillip Moolog is a chance to see ten of Smiths's textural sculptures, or ‘beings' as she prefers to call them. There is truth in the adage that there is "strength in numbers" as, although each is completely unique, together they magnify a sense of otherness which is quite unique to Smith's work. She aims to raise questions about the human psyche, memory and attachment. The Yin and Yang of Frillip Moolog is the second of four exhibitions being delivered by Bedford Creative Arts as part of their new Offsite Programme.
