If you read any book about quilting, it will start off by telling you the history of patchwork and quilting; how it was originally driven by utility; a need for warm clothing (e.g. the quilted petticoat) and protection (e.g. the sashiko quilted layers on the armour of Japanese warriors, and the quilted head coverings under the armour of knights.) Things have now moved on from mere utility and practicality, and it is the intention of this exhibition to champion the modern, artistic side of quilt making; to show what a thriving, if little known, art form it is; to increase the awareness of art quilts and their concerns, and show how these are executed. This exhibition showcases both quality of techniques and design. It features work by some of the top international quilt artists and teachers, who travel the world to show and teach methods of construction and design principles. Many have also written books, exhibited widely and have work in private collections at home and abroad.
