"The influences and preoccupations in the work are based on my response to both external and internal reality. I am attracted to subjects that reflect the passing of time; water and stone, light and reflections, shadows, the illusion of the infinite in a microcosm." – Jacky Lee. Jacky says her work is a personal response to the world through the medium of paint. She explains that she is trying to capture and translate thought, feeling and experience by making marks and exploring colour and texture. Her main concern, she concludes, is to find the most satisfying relationship between line and surface. "Jacky Lee produces bold. dynamic and ‘gutsy' abstract paintings which also have an incredible sensitivity and sense of calm. Jacky's use of rich colour and limited pallet combined with strong formal structures have an immediate impact, but the sensitive handling of the paint allows you to be drawn in and engage more fully with these forceful paintings. The surfaces are obviously well ‘worked', showing traces of previous colours or layers that have since been over painted. Working in oils, often on canvas wrapped round board, the artist is able to manipulate the surface in a fairly forceful manner. Jacky layers paint on with a knife and a brush; scrapes back and builds up the surfaces layer by layer over time.
