In the unique environment of Calke Abbey Park, Derbyshire, g8artists have found inspiration for a creative project that is centred around the ancient trees and industrial landscape that mark the special character of the area. Encouraged by the enthusiasm of the National Trust for their ideas the group were successful in seeking sponsorship from the Arts Council and The National Forest and have spent the last year working on the project. The” g8artists”, a group of seven artists based in Leicestershire, have enjoyed exhibiting together over a number of years but this marks an exciting new venture for them, working with the National Trust and The National Forest Company and being involved more directly with the public in activities and workshops. Taking an experimental approach to work that includes drawing, painting, print, textile, photography and mixed media they aim to raise awareness of the natural environment and our industrial heritage by presenting the familiar in a sometimes unfamiliar, thought-provoking way. See the Timescape “First Marks” exhibition, showing a collection of ideas, experimental and finished pieces of work, in the Riding School at Calke Abbey, June 6th – 14th . A preview, held at the Depot, Leicester May 18th-22nd, will give the City a taste of the work and an opportunity to map its progress.Exhibitions not to be missed.
