An exhibition of paintings, prints and collages by Robert Fitzmaurice
This new body of work takes its inspiration from the various forms of exchange (commercial and cultural) which took place between east and west in the 19th century treaty ports, especially Canton (Guangzhou). The title of the show echoes the historical dynamics of the Opium Wars, but also refers to the shifts between figurative and abstract language which characterise the work. Avoiding stereotypes, or a simplistic moralising tone, the imagery instead conjures up a realm of shifty merchants, dubious cargoes and louche dens.
