“I didn’t know trains could be so Arty……!!! blogged a reviewer who visited the debut version of this event in 2012. Originally conceived to reflect the heritage ethos of the NRM and displayed within ‘Locomotion’ Railway Museum, Shildon, this exhibition has been much extended in concept for its current showing at Darlington to encompass two events, each in their different way of national significance. Namely the 150th Anniversary of the opening of North Road Locomotive Works, Darlington, in 1863 and the 1914 outbreak of the 1st World War. Documentation and WW1 memorabilia combined with ceramic sculpture by Carolyn Corfield convey the personal poignancy of war and acknowledge events which impacted on the local community. Vera Hynes has used an unusual round canvas format for a suite of paintings which reflect both the dynamism of the railway age and her Brazilian roots, while the evocative images of photographer Graeme Rowatt concentrate on those who keep our rich railway history alive, their unique skills and the tools they use. Displayed within the Museum amongst the permanent exhibits their original, contemporary work delivers an intriguing journey through the artists’ imagination.
