Unique site responsive sculptures by the mixed media artist Carolyn Corfield are on display within Sheffield Anglican Cathedral. Amongst a treasure trove of pieces by members of the Northern Potters Association to be discovered throughout the Cathedral, Carolyn’s work, located in the Chapel of St. Katharine, take inspiration from the life of this Saint. Diverse ceramic art will intrigue and delight the visitor by the way in which it reflects wide ranging emotive responses from these artists and pays tangible homage to religious ethos and concept. Carolyn’s piece, ‘Voyaging the Volute’ (image), acknowledges St. Katharine as an icon of Christian faith. It references the volute, a spiral form which in ancient culture is a symbol for the ‘breath and the spirit’ and is also understood to indicate the ‘state of ecstasy’ which enables escape from the material world to enter the beyond. During this month long event a two week programme of special activities will take place 12th. to 25th. November, ranging from workshops and demonstration, culminating in a Japanese Tea Ceremony incorporating individual vessels created by all participating in the exhibition.Site specific work on show 10.30am – 5.30 1st. – 30th.
