TREELINE- MAUREEN COOPER
Spreading the word, about The National Forest, in Sheffield, Maureen Cooper’s retrospective exhibition at Bank Street Arts brings together a selection of work produced over a period of 5 years, inspired by the development of The National Forest area, and supported by The National Forest Company.
Work on the Ticknall Limeyards, now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, reflects their history and the power of nature to regenerate an area drastically altered by quarrying and burning of limestone in a thriving local industry.
Other work focuses on the emerging landscape of Feanedock Covert, an area of both established and newly planted woodland adjacent to a landfill site that could itself become woodland in the near future.
In small scale installation work around the idea of ‘protection’ she has used the very materials that safeguard newly planted trees. As well as the piece shown in this exhibition a larger scale installation ‘Ash Protector’ was made for Snibston Discovery Park. A reminder of the current vulnerability of ash trees against ash die back. https://www.behance.net/transformsnibston.
The presence of protectors in the landscape is also a feature of her mixed media images that may appear at first sight to be of a particular place but actually record the experience of walking through the landscape.
She hopes to encourage people to be aware of change in the forest and build their own memories and connections.
Exhibition runs April 8th –May 2nd Wed –Sat: 11am -4pm
