Undercover – work by recent embroidery graduates. In this exhibition, embroidery graduates stretch the boundaries of their craft. They are undercover embroiderers, infiltrating the worlds of fine art and illustration. The outcome of their work is diverse, but what connects the artists is their investment of time and skill, and their commitment to drawing, as a discipline as well as a means to a creative end. For these artists, drawing can be graphite on paper in Michelle Jones’s architectural studies, or thread through fabric in Mia Kiuru stitched portraits. But other work, such as Annie Harrison’s fossilised wave of sheets, Anna Beam’s troubled search for utopia, and Laura Mullen’s journey of discovery through the natural world, show that drawing can also exist in space. Jennifer Bradley and Lora Avidian’ s fantastical sets are 3-dimensional drawing which tempt the viewer to enter strange and unsettling worlds. ‘Undercover’ will challenge and inspire anyone whose idea of embroidery is limited to the domestic arena. We would like to invite anyone working freelance or with an organisation/publication to come review the exhibition
