I recently graduated with first class honours from Bath Spa University, having studied Fine Art with painting as my specialism. My work explores the complex space that exists between a painting and a photographic image.By making paintings that are sourced from photographs, I seek to imbue these resulting images with a sense of medium-specificity. There is a perceived elevation of status when a mass-produced image becomes an original painting, making it possible to recover fast-moving, disposable images thereby altering their pace and worth. Currently I am constructing a fictional family portrait, using a social networking site to contact members who share my (unusual) surname, and requesting a photograph of them.I want to use the proliferation of disposable imagery found on the ‘information superhighway’ to exploit the abstract nature of the global online community, drawing on Gerhard Richter’s 1966 assertion that “the painter need neither see nor know his sitter. A portrait must not express anything of the sitter’s ‘soul’, essence or character”.
