The 7-week programme launches with a special event on Thursday 9th May that will bring together DJ sets by NTS Radio enfant terrible SUE ZUKI, an immersive sound environment by Alicia Matthews & Robbie Thomson, live work from anti-disciplinary artist-veteran John Strutton, and sound/vision/music/movement by Andrew Pierre Hart and Roxman Gatt. This live programme will exist within an exhibition of interventions by artists Richie Moment, Andrew Sunderland, Kamile Ofoeme and Kara Chin, and activated by UCL Architecture Lab’s experiential design expertise.
PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME:
• ANDREW PIERRE HART
Improvised sound using digital devices, laptops, drum machines, mobile phones, microphones to build sensorous conversation.
• ROXMAN GATT
Multidisciplinary artist Roxman Gatt presents a post-pop club culture inspired performance of uninhibited music and movement that push Gatt’s ongoing interest in fetishisation and fast living.
• JOHN STRUTTON
Extending Strutton’s rich career of experimentation, ‘Original Copy’ will explore the translation of visual material into sound, using both the cultural iconography and material form of the 7-inch vinyl single to explore ideas of ritual and archaeo-acoustics.
• ALICIA MATTHEWS & ROBBIE THOMSON
Matthews and Thompson will reconfigure audacious collaboration Rottinghuis, delving audiences into an automated tableau of sound design, lighting and kinetic modern iconographies.
• SUE ZUKI (DJ Set)
SUE ZUKI curates an uncompromising mix of industrial, no wave, spoken word, techno and metal with samples from popular media, an ecstatic aural experience aptly dubbed “Rhythm and Gloom”.
Exhibiting Artists: Larry Archiampong, Kara Chin, Ollie Dook, Roxmann Gatt, Andrew Pierre Hart, Parker Heyl, Alicia Matthews, Richie Moment, Kamille Ofoeme, Laura O’Neill, Robbie Thompson, John Strutton, Andrew Sunderland, Voicedrone.
Programme Details: Up Is A Relative Concept is an exhibition and events programme featuring new installations, moving image, tactile interventions and more. Live experiences will activate the space with digital sound interventions and multimedia performances combining projection, music and movement.
An innovative public programme of live performances, discussion groups, film screenings, and workshops will generate a framework for advancing inclusive, multidisciplinary artistic communities, aiming to promote, educate and explore next-generation techniques in expanded fields of music, art and event production.
CURATED/PRODUCED BY KAROLINA MAGNUSSON MURRAY, RACHEL CUNNINGHAM CLARK & UCL INTERACTIVE ARCHITECTURE LAB.
Full Programme Timetable including a Panel Discussion on the future of creativity at the intersections of the industry with Nicholas Kaplony (Arts Quest), Seb Glover (co-founder of Fold) and UCL Interactive Architecture Lab course leader Ruairi Glynn, as well as performance nights with Larry Archiampong and Voicedrone TBA.
