Vibe³ (Vibe Cube) is a sound installation incorporating collected, donated, and archived sounds expressing “spirit of place”. Residents of Colchester, Harlow & Basildon were invited to submit both recordings and ideas for recordings reflecting the history, character, and unique feel of their area; from wildlife to nightlife, people working to children playing, historical sounds and contemporary noises; hundreds of sounds that make up the background to life in Essex. Artists Stuart Bowditch and Damien Robinson collected and redeveloped these into an ever-changing sound mix via the Vibe Cube, shown at locations in the three towns. Essex residents contributed their own sounds which they feel reflect the history and character of their area. Recordings range from ECG monitors at Basildon hospital and nightingales at Fingringhoe, a 1987 interview with an employee at the Trebor factory to a bucket blowing around in garages behind Harrison Road, clocks being wound at Tymperly’s museum to a 1906 recording of a poem recited by Charles Benham. This new mix was developed for this final venue of the 2009 Vibe³ tour after which all collected and donated sounds will be donated to Essex Sound Archive to contribute to the sonic history of the County. The public can continue to contribute sounds until September. See http://drop.io/vibecube for venue details and dates.
