Edward will be introducing himself and his role in addition to speaking about his vision for Devonshire Collective as a whole. Additionally, both Edward and Adam will be talking about VOLT and the future of its exhibitions, events and community outreach programme.
Participating speakers:
Appointed as Devonshire Collective Director last month, Edward Ball is a curator and writer who works collaboratively with artists on long-term projects across writing, performance and socially engaged practice. From 2018-2021 Edward was Artist Programme Curator at Freelands Foundation, working closely with a group of 20 emerging, and re-emerging, artists around the UK. As Director of White Rainbow (2015-2018), he commissioned exhibitions, performance and moving image by leading contemporary Japanese artists including Meiro Koizumi, Chikako Yamashiro and Aki Sasamoto. Edward’s writing has been published in frieze, Art Monthly, ArtReview, Apollo, Art Asia Pacific, among others, and he has held curatorial positions at Camden Art Centre and Liverpool Biennial. His recent book, Old Land New Waters, was published in January 2021 by Freelands Foundation.
Adam Spain is Devonshire Collective’s Exhibitions and Development Manager and has been a part of the organisation since 2019. He played an important role in reimagining Devonshire Collective’s DC1 site as VOLT – a new platform for emerging artists and creative community projects in Eastbourne – and maintaining its exhibition programme as one which champions diverse perspectives and voices within contemporary art. Adam has curated two public artworks on Seaside Road – ‘Gravitation’ by Lois O’Hara on VOLT’s façade and ‘Together’ by Will Mower on the old T.J. Hughes building – as well exhibitions with Bex Massey, Olivia Sterling, Lucy Woodhouse and the upcoming solo show by Jonathan Murphy ‘Parterre’ which opens on 28 October 2021.
