Wavelengths is a group exhibition that aims to present a fresh and contemporary artistic interpretation of Virginia Woolf’s nine novels[1]. 100 years ago, Woolf had published her first novel.  Today she is considered one of the foremost modernist female writers of the 20th Century, a pioneer of streams of consciousness narrative; her work, themes and concerns remain uncannily relevant to today’s society. Woolf was strongly connected to the South East having lived, written and died in East Sussex, close to her sister Vanessa Bell; both part of the Bloomsbury Group.

In this exhibition, nine contemporary artists seek to interpret Woolf’s written work on themes of memory, the passage of time, the corrosion and rejuvenation of life, the status of women in society, the consequences of war and existentialism. The exhibition will include installation, sculpture, photography, sound and video works.

We are thrilled to welcome four of the exhibiting artists from Wavelengths who will join us at Blue Monkey to talk about the work, the process of using novels as a source of inspiration, and how the nine artists have translated Woolf’s novels to make new work for the exhibition.

The artists exhibiting in Wavelengths are: Sam King, Jane Cordery, Kit Forrest, Sonia Griffin, Rachel Hornsby, Frederique Jones, Lorrain Mailer, Carolyn Morris and Venetia Nevill.

Wavelengths is a free exhibition at the Hastings Arts Forum, 36 Marina, St Leonard’s-on-Sea TN38 0BU from 18th – 30th September. Open 11.00 – 17.00. For more information follow on Instagram – Wavelengths_woolf – or contact Lorrain Mailer, [email protected] 07958 721 264
