When I Grow Up I Want To Be A Ship is a new artwork and installation by sound artist and composer Emily Peasgood.
It takes the form of a song, played through speakers in the gallery space, exploring Southampton’s complex relationship to the sea. Spanning a period of over 400 years, the song’s lyrical content explores the city’s every-changing coastline from the 1600s to the present day and into the future. Informed and inspired by local histories and local people, the song invites visitors to immerse themselves in the story of the Solent.
We will also be hosting a launch event on Friday 11th March at God’s House Tower from 6pm till late.
You can enjoy an exclusive performance of Emily’s song and hear the interpretations of three musicians and performers as they put their own take on Emily’s work. You’ll also have the chance to hear from Emily herself as she discuss the process of composing a song, working with local creatives and performers and exploring the history of Southampton’s coastline through personal narratives and stories.
