Throughout history, effigies, statues, and monuments, have been public declarations in their creation and destruction. Attacks on them signaling outrage, turmoil of the times, or ushering in a new order.
This scaled up matchstick kit of Lady Liberty, exhibited it a state of collapse, comments on liberty’s demise and possible reconstruction. The work references the demise of liberty – not just in America, but the world over. (This work is one of 28 other installations currently on show as part of Wells Art Contemporary. The exhibition at Wells Cathedral coincides with the installation of a new Antony Gormley work exhibited on the West Front of the Cathedral.)
