WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Timothy asserts that “the 20th century notion that art must be flat in order to be ‘truthful’ needs now to be challenged”. After 1910, pictorial space was too often shut down, rather than liberated, typically amounting to little more than a shallow shelf, parallel to the picture-plane. When Modernism eschewed Illusion it separated our art from some of the most rewarding experiences offered by earlier Western painting – the cosmic journeys of Brueghel and Lorenzetti, the airborne diagonal thrusts of Tintoretto and El Greco. Deep space doesn’t have to be academic. As Max Beckmann put it:
‘To transform height, width and depth into two dimensions was for me an experience full of magic, in which I glimpsed for a moment that fourth dimension my whole being was seeking.’
Our workshop will explore the diagonal, the peripheral, the anti-perspectival, the unsystematic, the subjective or ‘first person’ as it affects our drawing language. The all-powerful conventions of the camera (which has been described as ‘a little Brunelleschi Box’) have become a tyranny for many artists, suppressing the liberty of the roving human eye. Through drawing we can renew the experience of engaging imaginatively with all the possibilities of pictorial composition, the powerful emotions bound up with Near and Far, Above and Below, Left and Right.

Guest Series Format: Our Thursday evening series of workshops will focus on extending drawing through low-tech, low cost, DIY techniques. The creatives leading each workshop are young and emerging, yet each is working in a strong and accomplished way with their approach and materials.

BIO
Timothy Hyman trained as a painter at the Slade; as well as ten London solo shows, he has exhibited widely, and was elected a Royal Academician in 2011. He is an experienced teacher both as a painting mentor and advocate of drawing on location around the streets of London. His curation and writing is highly influential. Publications include The World New Made: Figurative Painting in the Twentieth Century, a monograph on Bhupen Khakhar, as well as both Bonnard and Sienese Painting in the World of Art series.
