Derek Curtis, ‘Learning from Las Vegas’, Gloss Paint on Aluminium, 2010. Courtesy: Charlie Dutton Gallery and artist. The title of the painting references the 1972 book by Robert Venturi, which called for a more receptive response to the tastes and values of the common man, Curtis plays with this critic of modernist architecture and the recent Time magazine source material to create a parody of the excess and speculation of the financial high rollers which helped create the current financial crisis.
