Cornerhouse Artist Film has announced details of the UK-wide release of new artist film, Art Party, by Bob and Roberta Smith and director Tim Newton.
The film, described as ‘part documentary, part road movie and part political fantasy’, is to be released on Thursday 21 August – the day GCSE results are announced – and will be accompanied by a series of parties across the UK.
Venues taking part include Cornerhouse, Manchester; ICA, London; Chapter, Cardiff; and Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough. Cinemas and art schools across the UK will also be involved, with a full list to be announced in June.
The film champions the importance of art and its place in education and political life, and stems from last November’s Art Party conference in Scarborough, which was instigated and co-organised by Bob and Roberta Smith. Mixing live footage with scripted scenes, the film stars John Voce as the strangely familiar Michael Grove MP and Julia Rayner as his hapless parliamentary aid.
Artists featured in the film include Cornelia Parker, John Smith, Haroon Mirza, Jeremy Deller, Richard Wentworth and Jessica Voorsanger. The soundtrack is provided by Flameproof Moth, the Ken Ardley Playboys and Jemma Freeman’s band The Fucks.
The film is to receive a test screening at Art Basel on Monday 16 June and at the Latitude Festival on Saturday 19 July.
