Artes Mundi, the Wales-based international art prize, has announced it is open for nominations for its seventh edition.
Curators, artists, writers, critics, gallerists and art historians are invited to submit nominations for artists who ‘engage with the reality of the everyday from a range of personal and cultural perspectives’, creating work that ‘directly engages with people’s everyday lives and experiences’.
There are no age or geographical restrictions but the artist must be actively making work and well known in their own country or region. They will also usually have some experience of exhibiting on the international art scene.
Every nomination received will be reviewed by three independent selectors who will shortlist up to eight artists to take part in the biennial exhibition at various venues across Cardiff in 2016-17.
The winning artist will also receive a prize of £40,000, with the shortlisted artists eligible for the £30,000 Derek Williams Trust Award. In addition, the prize enables National Museum Wales to purchase or commission a work from one of the artists.
Critically acclaimed
The call for nominations follows the critically acclaimed Artes Mundi 6, won by Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates. He famously split the winnings with the nine other shortlisted artists in a move that reflected both the socially-engaged, communal nature of his practice and the ethos of Artes Mundi itself.
The winner of the Derek Williams Trust Award this year was Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson.
Established in 2002, previous winners of the Artes Mundi prize were Teresa Margolles (2012), Yael Bartana (2010), N S Harsha (2008), Eija-Liisa Ahtila (2006) and Xu Bing (2004).
All nominations for Artes Mundi 7 must be received by 24:00 GMT on 15 May 2016.
