From 8-24 June, a collection of thirty-one programmed events, publications and exhibitions will take hold of alternative and artist-led spaces across the city. Supported by Creative Scotland, Embassy has produced a programme that ‘maps the city’, reflecting the breadth of grassroots visual arts activity in Scotland’s capital.
From open submission and call out for projects, the programme has been selected by the gallery’s committee: Luke Cooke-Yarborough; Alex Hare; Laurie Macpherson; and James Thomas Phillips. The committee’s approach is both inclusive and opportunistic, its collective goal to represent the city’s visual arts community in its many guises.
This approach is evident in ‘Record Store’, a group show curated by Chris Biddlecombe and Janie Nicoll at the Avalanche Record shop that explores the demise and subsequent rebirth of the vinyl record and includes contributions from Jim Lambie, Ross Sinclair and Alexander Violette among a list of over twenty artists.
Other highlights include: ‘Back Garden Biennale’, a suburban garden filled with multi-media installations that features Kai-Oi Jay Yung, Rachel McCrum and Aye Aye Books among others; and ‘It’s Hard to Find a Good Lamp’ at Rhubaba gallery, a group show exploring the boundaries between visual art, furniture and interior design that takes its name from a lecture by arch minimalist Donald Judd.
