Expatriates
Matthew Krishanu considers the history and legacy of colonialism in Bangladesh through his series of paintings depicting wild, overgrown landscapes, missionary buildings and English expatriates dressed in uniforms and saris. Curated by Contemporary British Painting and a-n News contributor Anneka French, Krishanu will be in conversation with writer and curator Hamja Ahsan on Saturday 5 November.

Light Touch
Artist film-maker Cathy Rogers‘ new photogram and pinhole films explore the subject of the garden, wrapping the film directly around Rosemary bushes or developing a film with lavender. Alongside these pieces are several of Rogers’ older film installations. The closing event on 1 November includes a screening of artists’ films.

Studio Life Lines
Artist A.M.Hanson curates a group show of works that respond to the rapid decline in studio provision and increasing loss of artists’ work spaces throughout London. Artists include Alex Dipple, Billa Baldwin and kennardphillipps.

The Mechanics of Depression
Carlie Simpkin uses humour, empathy and personal insight to convey the experience of depression. The 10 artworks presented here use a variety of methods, including simulation and metaphor, to explore hopelessness, fatigue, emptiness and isolation. For this exhibition, Simpkin has partnered with the charity Rethink Mental Illness and welcomes donations of spare change to their cause.

Art Possibility Action
A one-day workshop looking at how artists can bring about social change. Facilitated by Rhiannon Westphal from Seeds for Change, artist Nina Edge, Mel Evans of Liberate Tate, Kerry Morrison of In Situ and James Marriott of Platform share their experiences and strategies for making work that has an effect beyond the confines of the gallery. The workshop is part of Jane Lawson‘s project Second Degree Potentias and aims to prompt thought and action ‘about art in the service of life’.
